Ted Stevens Holds Slight Lead in Alaskan Senate Race

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - After a sometimes thrilling, sometimes bumpy run in the national spotlight, Alaska saw its governor defeated for vice president. Still uncertain was the future of the state's senior senator, his standing as a political giant hammered by corruption convictions. Voters were deciding whether to overlook Ted Stevens' convictions and re-elect the Republican who has represented Alaska in Washington, D.C., for 40 years.

Republican Wins Circuit Clerk Post in Close Race

Republican Ronnie Matthews won a tight race for the job of Putnam County circuit clerk. Matthews, 55, of Winfield defeated Democrat Darlene Smith, 48, of Winfield for the unexpired term of former clerk Don Wright, who died in October 2007. His widow, Nina Wright was appointed to succeed him until a new circuit clerk could be elected.

Clinton Supporters Help Obama in Ohio

Ohio presented enormous challenges for Sen. Barack Obama. Not only did George W. Bush win the bellwether state in 2000 and 2004, but Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York won this year's Democratic primary there. But those primary voters seem to have helped put the Illinois Democrat over the top Tuesday night. Just 17 percent of Ohio voters who described themselves as Clinton supporters cast ballots for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., according to network exit polls.

Doug Skaff, Jr. earned a spot in the House of Delegates in his first try at public office, and Mark Hunt will make a return to the Legislature after a two-year absence. Skaff, 31, led seven Democrats, including Hunt, who claimed seats in the 30th District House race in Kanawha County. The 30th includes South Charleston, South Hills, St. Albans, Kanawha City and much of eastern Kanawha County.
