Work with Anti-Tobacco Group Gives Student a Sense of Purpose

Summary

My community service work that I am most proud of is the work that I do with Teens Against Tobacco. I have been involved in the program since I was in sixth grade, and I hope to continue through college. The event that is the most meaningful to me is a camp that we do during the summer called Teen Institute. The camp is designed for students going into grades seventh through ninth. For the past three summers I have been a youth staff at the camp. Being on youth staff is a huge responsibility because the adults basically let us run the camp, they are there to help supervise and make sure everything goes smooth throughout the week. Our job as youth staff is to plan, organize, and make smart decisions about drugs, smoking, alcohol, and other pressures that they face.

To be invited to be on the staff you must do other anti-tobacco activities throughout the school year. This is when I got involved in RAZE at our school. In the program we get other students to become involved in prevention. The most rewarding part of being involved in tobacco prevention activities is when students come up to me and tell me that the message I gave was effective.
