Q: I have a 1-year-old, long-haired Chihuahua. In the last week, he has started to itch a lot and gnaw on his front and back legs. I know it isn't fleas because I have treated him with Revolution for the last six months. He isn't losing hair anywhere, just continuously itching. Could this be caused by just dry skin, and, if so, is there anything I can give him to help? Is there anything I can try to do for him before I take him in to be allergy tested?

A: This is a terrible time of year for animals to be itching. As we change seasons from summer to fall, grasses and trees and weeds are giving off allergens like crazy. In addition to that, the last two months have been almost completely dry; hence, the perfect storm of allergens and allergies. Humans sneeze, have scratchy throats and runny noses. Animals itch, have red skin, itch, have ear infections, itch, lick their paws - and did I say itch a lot? Well, you get the picture.
