Ga. Churches Set On Marriage Ban: ; Congregants Urged to Support Change to State Constitution

ATLANTA - Many Georgia churches are preparing sermons and some plan to slip voter-registration cards into bulletins to encourage congregants to vote for this fall for a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriages.

"It's one of the major moral issues facing us today," said Ray Newman, a lobbyist for the 3,500-church Georgia Baptist Convention, which strongly supports changing the constitution to define marriage as a union strictly between a man and a woman. "We're very pleased this vote is going forward."
