The state is paying a Charlotte resident who is overseeing museum renovations in the Capitol basement more than $150,000 a year plus thousands of dollars in expenses to commute to Charleston from his North Carolina home.

The state has reimbursed James Scott Hunt for $22,478 in expenses since Oct. 2, 2006. Most of that - $18,848 - involved commuting expenses, according to state records.

In 2007, Hunt's total state compensation, minus expenses, was $156,525, according to Auditor Glen Gainer's office.
