In other words, an employee with 10 years of service would receive a $1,380 raise, the story incorrectly said.
Actually, the 381 members of the police and fire departments each will be getting a longevity raise of only $138 next year. To account for current and past raises for someone with 10 years of experience, $1,380 is set aside in the 2010-11 budget in a separate account.
