Mr. Delmer Watson Asbury, 85, of Cameron, N.C., died Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at his home.

He was born April 8, 1926, in Kanawha County to the late Andrew Watson Asbury and Pearl Mae Asbury. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Birton Asbury and Kenneth Ray Asbury.

Mr. Asbury served our country in the United States Marine Corps, earning a Purple Heart after being wounded during the Battle of Okinawa. He retired, after 36 years of service, from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a civilian employee, working on locks and dams.

He attended Hillmon Grove Baptist Church; was a lifelong member of the 6th Marine Association; lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans; 32nd Degree Mason with Dunbar Lodge #159 with Scottish Rite Bodies; member of the Johnsonville Golden Adventures Senior Citizens Group; Volunteer of the Year for 1999 in Western Harnett County; and helped build the first Habitat for Humanity house in Western Harnett County.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alva Lee Reed Asbury; two daughters, Lori Clemenger of Raeford, N.C., and Denise Seals and husband, Jesse, of Houston, Texas; one brother, Earlie Asbury of Rockford, Ill.; two granddaughters, Jamie Upton and husband, Master Sgt. (P) David Upton, of Broadway, N.C., and Jessica Miller and husband, Capt. John Miller, of Vicenza, Italy; and four great- grandchildren, Alyssa and Peyton Thomas and Jeremy and Asher Upton, all of Broadway.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, January 7, at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home, Sanford, N.C.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 8, at Hillmon Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Wroten, the Rev. Shannon Arnold and the Rev. Wayne O'Quinn presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, friends bring non- perishable food items to the visitation or funeral that will then be donated to the food bank.
