The Charleston-area Salvation came in about $25,000 short of its $250,000 goal for this year's red kettle campaign, but an increase in volunteer bell-ringers more than made up for the loss.

The charity raised $224,883 in its kettles this year. Thanks to volunteers, however, it saved $46,656 that would have otherwise been spent on paid bell-ringers.
