America's mouth must be watering. With the exploding popularity of food-related programs and amateur chef "reality" competitions, it's no secret that cooking shows are big business. In fact, a recent Harris Poll found that not only do half of all Americans report watching these shows often, but many also say they've gone out and made purchases as a direct result.

Nearly 60 percent of those who watch say they've picked up a particular food after seeing it prepared on a cooking show. Almost 40 percent have bought a gadget used on TV, a quarter of all respondents have purchased cookbooks promoted, and, perhaps most surprisingly, 6 percent say they have gone out and bought a large appliance used in one of these programs.
