Summary
Charleston artist William Douglas Doug Goebel recreated some of the citys and states most famous landscapes and scenes. His pen-and- ink drawings are studies in detail. The St. Albans native captured everything from Charlestons skyline to the Tyler County Courthouse and Woodburn Hall at West Virginia University.
A former educator, Goebel was open about his battle with alcoholism and facing down the other demons in his life. In a 2003 profile about being commissioned by the Charleston Renaissance Corp. to produce two pieces evoking the recent history of the city, he reflected that the first time he'd ever heard of the organization he was sitting on a bar stool at a downtown watering hole.See the full content of this document
