With pockets of teachers talking sick-outs and even a strike to protest pay levels, Gov. Joe Manchin is hoping a new look at the numbers will persuade lawmakers to abandon their push for a 3.5 percent salary hike for educators.

The governor is sticking with his original proposal of a 2.5 percent raise, spokeswoman Lara Ramsburg said Sunday. But Manchin is pairing that hike with the additional funding that the state began adding to the teachers' salary schedule in 2005.
