HUNTINGTON - When Mildred Mitchell-Bateman said she wanted to go into medicine as a young girl in the 1930s, not everyone was supportive. Decades later, no one can deny her impact on the mental health field.
Mitchell-Bateman has received countless awards, was the first black woman named to a high-ranking office in West Virginia government, and is the namesake of one of the state's two psychiatric hospitals. The 86-year-old doctor currently lives in Charleston and works about once a week at the University Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic in Huntington.
