Gov. Joe Manchin and Arch Coal Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Steve Leer are among the dignitaries who were expected to be on hand today as Arch Coal marked the opening of its Mountain Laurel mining complex in Logan County.

Mountain Laurel is expected to be one of the last big underground coal mines to be built in central Appalachia because few large blocks of reserves remain. Mountain Laurel has more than 100 million tons of reserves and is expected to produce four to five million tons of coal annually for 20 years.
