WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Patti Frist was the strong one. In her close-knit soldier family support group, she was the leader, a comforter with the answers.

She helped family members and soldiers fill out insurance forms and other paperwork. Under her leadership, the group raised money with car washes and T-shirt sales to send handheld fans to the soldiers in the summer and 400 pounds of nuts at Christmas.
