N.Y. Attorney General Files Suit Against H&R Block Over Accounts

ALBANY, N.Y. - New York state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer sued H&R Block Inc., charging the nation's largest tax preparer with steering hundreds of thousands of people into individual retirement accounts that cost more than they earned.

The civil complaint filed in state Supreme Court in Manhattan claims H&R Block pitched IRAs to 500,000 clients, including 30,000 New Yorkers, who were "virtually guaranteed to lose money" because of hidden fees and low interest rates, Spitzer said.
