CLARKSBURG - The number of homeless students in West Virginia's public schools is rising.

The number of children legally defined as homeless jumped from 4,234 in the 2008-09 school year to around 5,000 this past year, said Liza Cordeiro, spokeswoman for the West Virginia Department of Education.
