Officials Say New Prison Safe From Funding Freeze

WELCH - Funds for a new medium-security federal prison in McDowell County are safe despite a plan to freeze congressional earmarks, a county official says.

County Commission President Gordon Lambert said construction of the prison in Welch is expected to start in approximately six weeks. Lambert expects no problem retaining $142 million in federal funding that was earmarked for the project.
