PRE-PRISON WORK The Daily Mail asked the agency to compile the occupations of 53,729 inmates it has put into its computer system since January 2003. Among the findings: * 1,059 worked for restaurants. * 905 worked in construction, repair or landscaping. * 641 were self-employed * 497 worked for convenience stores, retail shops or gas stations. * 472 worked in the automotive industry. * 373 worked for the federal, state, county or local government. * 145 worked in the health care field. * 71 were in the military. Most inmates, though, are unemployed. Of the inmates reviewed, 43,608 didnt report a job or occupation.
