Pentagon Budget Shift Aimed at China Balance

Summary


Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who is traveling to Beijing for his first visit since 2007, said Saturday the Pentagon is rearranging budget priorities partly in response to Chinese military developments.

Gates also said China may be developing a stealth fighter more quickly than the U.S. had estimated. He will spend 2 1/2 days in the Chinese capital, his second visit as defense secretary, before going on to Tokyo and Seoul for talks focused mainly on North Korea.
