Rescue groups worried that budget cuts would lead to the gassing of nearly 100 animals at a Mason County shelter pulled off an interstate relocation effort over the weekend, moving nearly all of them to safety.

Last week, the county-run shelter had 80 dogs and 50 cats, most of which were to be removed - either by adoption, rescue or euthanasia - within 14 days. By Monday afternoon, only 10 dogs and 12 cats remained, and the director who had quit in frustration was back on the job.
