IT was a cold winter day when I brought my three pampered suburban children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was 100 years old, there was snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse - as was the insulation. The floors weren't even, either.

My then 12-year-old son walked in the door and said, "You've brought us to this slanted little house to die." Even I wondered what we were doing there. I just knew I was looking for home.
