Storms Leave Thousands Powerless Throughout State

Fast-moving thunderstorms with winds up to 50 mph moved eastward through West Virginia just as polls were closing for municipal elections, downing trees and causing power outages that delayed vote counting in at least one town.

The storms left 20,000 American Electric Power customers without power Tuesday, said company spokesman Phil Moye. A transmission line went down in eastern Kanawha County, leaving 3,400 customers without power. Lights were still not back on by 11 p.m.
