SO, let's get this straight. . . As Congress rushed to adjourn for Christmas, the House of Representatives passed a bill that, among other things, extends the 2011 payroll tax holiday for another year, which is what President Obama called for.

The Senate, unable to agree on other provisions in the bill, finally compromised on a two-month extension of the cut, with a promise to return to Washington early next year to make it a year- long reduction.
