AMNESTY International's secretary general, Irene Khan, speaking from London, recently called Guantanamo Bay, where the United States has detained more than 500 prisoners from 40 countries, "the gulag of our time."

William F. Schultz, executive director of Amnesty International USA, went on a similar toot, calling upon President George W. Bush for a full investigation of what he called "the atrocious human rights violations at Abu Ghraib and other detention centers."
