PEOPLE who want to be prosecutors need to know the law and show respect for it themselves. Judging from the e-mail traffic brought to light by a legislative audit, former U.S. Attorney Kasey Warner and Kanawha County Prosecutor Bill Charnock were confused on some points.

Charnock was executive director of the state-funded Prosecuting Attorney's Institute from 1999 until December. In a report released Sunday, the Legislative Auditor's Office contended that Charnock used the assets of that office - state computers, phones, supplies, equipment, time - on the political campaigns of his brother and sister, as well as his own.
