THE Charleston Fire Department lost seven men in the terrible Woolworth fire of 1949. The Capitol Street tragedy has shaped the values and the training of the department for 60 years.

Myron Boggess, president of the Charleston Professional Firefighters, recently tracked down the resting places of those seven men. He was displeased to find that the graves of firefighters George Coates and Richard McCormick - in what was then the "black section" of Spring Hill Cemetery - lacked markers that would make their sacrifice clear to visitors.
