COLUMBUS, Ohio - American Electric Power said its third quarter earnings rose 54 percent, helped by a warmer than normal summer that boosted energy usage.

AEP, one of the nation's largest power generators, said it made $407 million, or $1.02 per share, for the quarter ended Sept. 30 compared with a profit of $265 million, or 67 cents per share, a year ago, when it recorded a charge for the sale of a plant in Louisiana. Revenue rose 6 percent to $3.8 billion, from $3.6 billion last year.
