THE official Yale defense for its admission of Ramatullah Hashemi, 27, as a part-time student, despite his fourth-grade education, is a bit like reading "Alice In Wonderland" as re- written by George Orwell:

"Ramatullah Hashemi escaped the wreckage of Afghanistan and was approved by the U.S. government for a visa to study in this country. Yale has allowed Hashemi to take courses for college credit in a part-time program that does not award Yale degrees.
